The Micro-site Isn’t Dead. (It’s Just Not Useful)

If there’s one type of headline that gets attention—it’s about claiming the death of something. Well, I’d like to proclaim the “un-dead” nature of a format which I think has the potential to become something more powerful than we are currently seeing today. The Micro-site first became adopted by the marketing community as a tool of convenience. It simply became too unwieldy to continue adding sections to our large company/product Websites every time we wanted to promote a new product, feature or service. And specifically for advertisers—well, they needed an online extension for their campaigns to live in the digital space.

6 Metrics for Managing UI Design

“As part of a recent management summit at my company, we were asked to fill out an RMPT matrix for our departments (I head up Product Design). An RMPT matrix consists of (R)esponsibilities, (M)etrics, (P)rocesses, and (T)ools. I have been intending to develop better metrics for both measuring and guiding our design efforts, and this exercise served as a catalyst to get me started. “

Ma.gnolia.org

“M2 is a ground-up rewrite of Ma.gnolia, re-creating features we love today, taking a second run at what didn’t worked as well as planned, on a distributed, service-based architecture designed to handle the large volumes of data we’ve seen. But even more significant, M2 will be an open source project that can be downloaded to remix and run as your own.”

Typeface != Font

“A typeface is not a font. A font is not a typeface. It’s been said before, but confusion still resigns supreme; even the Online Etmology Dictionary and the holders of the rights to Georgia get it wrong. So, at the risk of stating the obvious, but in the hope that someone might find this useful, I’m going to attempt a little disambiguation.”

Rethinking Education, Degrees and Achievement

The BA acquired its current inflated status by accident. Advanced skills for people with brains really did get more valuable over the course of the 20th century, but the acquisition of those skills got conflated with the existing system of colleges, which had evolved the BA for completely different purposes.

Outside a handful of majors — engineering and some of the sciences — a bachelor’s degree tells an employer nothing except that the applicant has a certain amount of intellectual ability and perseverance. Even a degree in a vocational major like business administration can mean anything from a solid base of knowledge to four years of barely remembered gut courses.

For Most People, College Is a Waste of Time – WSJ.com

The Web Development industry and the larger high tech arena have shown that knowledge in itself is more valuable than a degree many times over. How many millions, if not billions of dollars have been made by brilliant minds without formal college education? How many more could have been made in the time that others lost to courses that did not prepare them?

The Complainist

The Complainist is dedicated to testing the limits of customer service departments. If there’s a possibility that an idiot might misunderstand a product’s intended use, we will be that idiot. We like to nitpick over details that most sensible people would just let go. The thought of a customer service representative actually believing that someone could be this stupid really gives us a thrill. This has all been done under the guise of Linda Wilson, so far, although we have plans to add more characters in the future.

Design Resources Pack #1: The Grunge Pack, Brushes, Fonts, Textures etc…

Welcome to the very first edition of our Design Resources Pack, the basic idea behind this is; we collect a load of resources around a certain theme or style and put them together in one place. Grunge is a style which is often misunderstood. Grunge doesn’t always have to mean really over the top dirty and dark. Today grunge comes in many forms, subtle grunge effects seem to be more common than just completely “grunging” something up. Whether you choose to be subtle, or over-the-top with your Grunge style here are some amazing resources to help you out.

The invisible city: Design in the age of intelligent maps

Today’s intelligent maps don’t just represent spatial relationships, they reveal conditions in the city that were previously hidden in spreadsheets and databases. And it’s not just a new representation of the city that emerges out of this data; its a new hybrid city, part physical texture and part data-driven map. As maps have become more complex, they have become our native medium for analyzing environments and societies, essential parts of the decision-making process in policy making.
