Y’all Vs. Ya’ll

Y’all
Y’all
Y’all

Damnit!

It is short for “you all” - get it right if you are going to use it. This is such a simple use of the language. It isn’t that hard to remember the basics of contractions from those early school years… Is it?

I had to correct someone on a Web development list today who proudly proclaimed he was a Texan (as well he should) and thus had the right to use the term. Then he spelled it wrong multiple times!

sigh

Sharing is Good

I finally figured out how to set up the local network in a way that allows the Mac, the XP box and Linux box to all print to our sad little HP 693C. The key problem has been the fact that Windows doesn’t want to share the printer with non-MS machines (surprise surprise). So, a couple of weeks ago I decided to hook it up to Sarah’s Mac as OS X has great printer sharing capabilities. But, apparently OS X cannot use the printer. HP will not provide a driver for it for OS X and the Mac won’t even select it as a generic printer. I was rather annoyed to say the least when I figured all of this out.

But this morning I realized that it is relatively trivial to add the printer to the fileserver (running Mandrake Linux 9.1). With a quick change to samba.conf (the Samba configuration file) and a restart of the process we were presented with a printer that works across platform lines.

It sure as hell took long enough!

Mornin’

Ella decided that 5 in the A.M. was an ideal time to wake me up with her cold nose on my arm. As per usual in these situations we went downstairs and out the front door to give her a chance to mark the territory. While I waited I thought about the time.

If I went back to sleep I was almost guaranteed to be i nthe midst of REM when my alarm went off, leading to a groggy morning. Not a good thing.

So, I am up an hour and fifteen minutes earlier than usual. The pup is happily gnawing a nylabone on the floor behind me.

Yawn

World Poker Tour Fan Site

Andy Bloch happened upon my previous post titled World Poker Tour and was kind enough to point out that my statement that the show did not follow a set schedule was wrong. I had picked up on this a while back, but hadn’t noted it on the site. I hope I didn’t lead anyone astray! If so, I am truly sorry.

Andy provided a link to The World Poker Tour Fan site in his signature for the comment. Man, is that site packed chock full of information and commentary! I have much to read in my copious (heh, yeah right) free time. I will find a way.

Lee Allison

When I am making the big bucks and have the need to wear ties I think many will come from The Lee Allison Company. While I detest the fact that they use frames on their site, thus making it near impossible for me to bookmark a given tie, the design itself is well executed.

Some of the ties I would wear:

I love finding people and companies injecting creativity into the staid industries.

Welcome
